In the letter, Adichie expresses her disappointment with the US government for accepting the results of Nigeria’s “disastrous” election, despite evidence of “deliberate manipulation.”
Adichie argues that by congratulating the winner of Nigeria’s rigged election, the US has tarnished its commitment to democracy. She accuses American intelligence of being inept for accepting the election results despite evidence of manipulation. Adichie also highlights the apathy from the US government, which she believes has contributed to the hollowing out of democracy in Nigeria.
In her letter, Adichie urges Biden not to give the sheen of legitimacy to an illegitimate process and to uphold America’s self-proclaimed commitment to democracy. She also emphasizes the importance of holding Nigeria’s leaders accountable for their actions and ensuring that the voices of Nigerian citizens are heard.
