The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) increased the currency in circulation from ₦2.91tn in December 2020 to ₦3.33tn in December 2021.
The data released by the apex bank revealed that the currency in circulation had increased by 19.06 per cent from ₦2.44tn recorded as of December 2019.
CBN in its report on currency operations disclosed that “the growth in CIC reflected the continued dominance of cash in the economy.”
The apex bank in its report wrote, “Analysis of the CIC shows that a greater proportion was in higher denomination banknotes (N100, N200, N500 and N1000). The higher denomination banknotes together accounted for 63.47 per cent and 98.08 per cent of the total CIC, in terms of volume and value, respectively.
“The volume of lower denomination banknotes (N5, N10, N20, N50) accounted for 28.43 per cent of the total CIC and 1.92 per cent, in terms of value as at end-December 2020.”
CBN further stated that electronic payment options were introduced with a major aim of reducing the number of naira notes used for transactions, but not to eliminate cash usage.
According to CBN, cashless transactions using the e-payments would help to increase convenience, provide more service options, reduce the risk of cash-related crimes, and provide cheaper access to (out-of-branch) banking services and access to credit.
The currency in circulation was defined as currency in the hands of the general public and in the vaults of the Deposit Money Banks.
The CBN said it employed the “accounting/statistical/withdrawals & deposits approach” to compute the currency in circulation in Nigeria.
It said this approach involved tracking the movements of currency in circulation on a transaction-by-transaction basis.
The apex bank further stated that for every withdrawal made by a Deposit Money Bank at one of CBN’s branches, an increase in CIC is recorded; and for every deposit made by a DMB at one of CBN’s branches, a decrease in CIC is recorded.
The transactions are all recorded in the CBN’s CIC account, and the balance on the account at any point in time represents the country’s currency in circulation.

Damilola while narrating her side of the story in a post on Instagram said Timaya after hitting her left her in the pool of blood.
She accused Timaya of dragging her on the road, while she sustained injuries on her face, knees, right hand and some other parts of her body.
According to Damilola, she was rushed to a nearby pharmacy where she managed to reach out to her husband who then took her to Reddington Hospital.
The hit-and-run victim in a post on Instagram wrote, “Not only that he dragged me on the road where I sustained injuries on my face, my two knees, my right hand, all my acrylic nails forcefully pulled out before I knew it, he ran away leaving me in my own pool of blood.
“Then passerby rushed me to a nearby pharmacy where I managed to call my husband before I was later taken to Reddington Hospital where I received about 15 stitches on my face and another treatment was administered before I was later discharged later in the evening and was taken to General hospital for further treatment.”
Damilola also accused the singer of bullying her when she confronted him for hitting her car.
She wrote, “How can you tell the whole world you didn’t notice you hit a car? I knocked on your side window to draw your attention only for you to bully me as a woman.
“Timaya Inetimi @timayatimaya you are wicked and heartless. You painted your wicked act of hit and run with emotion.”
The victim who stated that Timaya wouldn’t have reacted if he wasn’t called out on social media said, “Your conscience will continue to judge you cause you intentionally hit me off with your green G wagon boasting that you are a celebrity.
“Your lawyer came and sympathised with me in the general hospital at about 10:30 pm and your lawyer said this is too much for someone to let it slide.
“The pains you inflicted on me by your recklessness and no respect for womanhood. The permanent scar you inflicted on me intentionally. All I want is justice as he isn’t feeling remorse because he should not go scot-free to serve as a deterrent for others.”

The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye made this known on Tuesday while speaking with newsmen in Abuja.

“The Commission has not been served with a copy of the said judgment.
“The Commission will meet and take a decision when it is served with a Certified True Copy of the judgment,” Okoye said.
Naija News recalls the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, sacked Umahi and Igwe, for dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
Delivering judgement on Tuesday, Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered Umahi and his Deputy to immediately vacate their officer, asking INEC to replace them with a candidate from PDP.
He held that the total number of 393, 042 votes Umahi secured during the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Ebonyi state, belonged to the PDP and cannot be transferred to the APC.
Ekwo said that following the outcome of the governorship election, the office of the governor and deputy governor in Ebonyi state, “belong to the Plaintiff and no other political party”.
It also asked INEC to replace them with a candidate from PDP.
In a swift move, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has named Iduma Igariwe and Fred Udogwu as its nominees for Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State respectively.
Naija News reports that the National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, made this known at a media briefing on Tuesday evening.
But Dave Umahi has rejected the ruling of an Abuja high court which sacked him from office as the Governor of Ebonyi State.
Speaking to newsmen in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Umahi said that the ruling should not be recognized by his followers.
He tagged the ruling by Justice Inyang Ekwo of Abuja Federal High Court as “jungle justice that was purchased.”

At least, eight gallant soldiers of the Nigerian Army have reportedly paid a supreme price during a gun battle in Kebbi State with suspected bandit terrorists.
Naija News understands that the military officers were deployed to the Zuru district of the State, to battle and restrain bandits operating in the neighbouring communities from influx into Kebbi.
The deployment of the soldiers to the area came following the killing of over sixty vigilantes otherwise known as Yan-Sa-Kai by gunmen fleeing from Niger State.
The said Yan-Sa-Kai is a group of local men who have volunteered to themselves from various towns and villages to form informal vigilante units to protect themselves from bandit raids, Naija News understands.
A massive number of the volunteer local security men were, however, killed on Monday during a confrontation with a group of bandits.
Confirming the recent attack which reportedly claimed the lives of soldiers, a source from Sakaba Local Government Area of the state told SaharaReporters on Tuesday night that eight of the soldiers deployed to the emirate have been killed by gunmen.
The source said the bandits moved swiftly into the community after banning of local security outfits by the state government last year.
According to the source, the local security outfits have been checkmating the monsters until the state governor disarmed them last year.
The governor according to him accused the security outfit of engaging in unlawful killings but he did not provide an alternative.
“Immediately after banning our local security outfit, bandits then moved in and have been killing mercilessly since then,” Sahara Reporters quoted the source as saying.
He added: “Some hours ago, some soldiers were deployed but unfortunately, the bandits have just killed eight of the soldiers. So sad, we are no longer safe.”
Recalling the disturbing killing of the volunteer vigilantes, another source told newsmen that the deceased persons were ambushed and killed by the terrorists after being fed wrong information regarding the location of the bandits.
The source said: “Yesterday, after killing many people and rustling cows, the youths from Dabai, Magajiya, Ribah, Diri and Danrnagi villages confronted the bandits with their locally made guns.
“They killed many of the Bandits; along the line, someone called them and gave them wrong information about the location of the bandits, so that was how they fell into the ambush of the bandits.
“The location is Sakaba Local Government Area, Zuru Emirate, Kebbi state. It’s a border town between Kebbi South and Niger. The town has produced many Generals.
“Right now, they are still operating in Zuru villages. The soldiers and the police are more afraid than the civilians.”
