He said, “It is hard to believe that my daughter is no more.”

While speaking on the condolence visit of the Lagos State Governor, he said, “As a man of God, I pray for him and other leaders from my altar every day so I want him to help me get justice.”

The mother of the deceased, Comfort while speaking on the incident said that the verbal-note evidence her daughter sent to her friend before she was killed should be enough evidence for the government to prosecute the driver.

She said, “The evidence which had gone viral should be enough evidence for the prosecution of the suspect.

“The driver is now lying that kidnappers pointed a gun at him and dragged our daughter out of the BRT bus he was driving and was in transit then.

“Kidnappers pointed a gun at him, dragged his passenger out from the bus in transit and he did not go to the police station to report the matter, it is a lie.”

Nnamdi Kanu Removed As IPOB Leader? – Lawyer Clears The Air

Nnamdi Kanu Removed As IPOB Leader? - Lawyer Clears The Air

Embattled Biafra Nation agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has not been removed or replaced as the IPOB leader, his legal counsel confirmed in a statement.

The reports making the rounds that Kanu has been replaced with one Sofia Chinyere Kalu as Director of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB in the United Kingdom has been trashed by his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor.

Naija News understands that reports in some quarters have claimed Mrs Kalu who is the group’s Financial Secretary in the UK, has taken the position of Kanu who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Security Service, DSS.

A separatist who manages IPOB and Radio Biafra Community Interest Companies (CIC) Registry in London, UK, Ezeji Chukwuma had said Kalu is the new Director of IPOB worldwide.

Naija News understands that the claim was re-echoed by a self-styled disciple of Kanu, Simon Ekpa.

The reports have, however, called for a clear clarification from Ejimakor.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday, Ejimakor insisted that Kanu is still the Director of IPOB in the United Kingdom, UK.

He maintained that IPOB’s structure has not changed even though the leader has been in detention for many days.

“The report is untrue in its entirety. The organizational structure of IPOB as a legal entity in the UK remains as it was, with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as the Director,” Ejimakor said.

Meanwhile, Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Youth Council, has urged people of South-West and South-South to allow a Southeast extraction of a Nigerian president in 2023 to reciprocate the latter’s political sacrifices to them.

Naija News reports that the national president of OYC, Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, made this known in a press release on Thursday ahead of the Southern Youth Leaders’ Summit coming up in Owerri.

He said, “In every fairness, former Governor Bola Tinubu’s political teams and APC political elite and members from South-West owe Dr Ogbonnaya Onu a political reciprocation. Dr Onu dropped his presidential ambition in 1999 with APP, which made Chief Olu Falae the party’s presidential candidate. Dr Onu deserves a regional honour from Yoruba nation.

“It is obvious that towards the actualization of South-west presidential project in 1999, South-East paid an ultimate price through Dr Alex Ekwueme who played low and accepted internal arrangements for Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to pick the presidential ticket of PDP in 1999.

“It will amount to regional and tribal hatred if any presidential aspirant from South-West decides to challenge South-east presidential aspirants in APC in the forthcoming 2022 primary election. The South-East became political spectators in the 1999 presidential election just to allow South-West to play the presidential political tournament which led to the victory of Chief Obasanjo.”

He also appealed while reminding the South-South people of the gestures displayed by the southeasterners which paved the way for the emergence of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the vice and later president of Nigeria in the year 2011 and 2015, respectively.

UK Govt Sanctions Roman Abramovich, Stops Chelsea Sale

The UK Government has sanctioned Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich in the latest crackdown on Russian assets in the country.

Naija News reports that the billionaire is one of seven wealthy Russian individuals who had sanctions placed on them by the government on Thursday.

Also affected by the sanctions are billionaires and allies of President Vladimir Putin of Russia, Igor Sechin and Oleg Deripaska, Andrey Kostin and Alexei Miller.

Others affected by the sanctions are Nikolai Tokarev and Dmitri Lebedev, whose business empires, wealth and connections are closely associated with the Russian president.

Following the sanctions, Abramovich will have his assets frozen and will be prohibited from carrying out any transactions with UK individuals and businesses.

The Chelsea owner will also face a travel ban and further transport sanctions.

Also, Chelsea will operate as a club with a special charity license and the proposed sale of the club by Abramovich has also been stopped.

The club won’t be able to sell new tickets for games or sign new players but will be able to carry out their daily activities.

Speaking on the sanctions, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “There can be no safe havens” for those who have supported the invasion.

“Today’s sanctions are the latest step in the UK’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.

“We will be ruthless in pursuing those who enable the killing of civilians, destruction of hospitals and illegal occupation of sovereign allies.”

A government statement said: “Given the significant impact that today’s sanctions would have on Chelsea football club and the potential knock-on effects of this, the Government has this morning published a licence which authorises a number of football-related activities to continue at Chelsea.

“This includes permissions for the club to continue playing matches and other football-related activity which will in turn protect the Premier League, the wider football pyramid, loyal fans and other clubs.

“This licence will only allow certain explicitly named actions to ensure the designated individual is not able to circumvent UK sanctions. The licence will be kept under constant review and we will work closely with the football authorities.”

DSS Arrests Two LGA Chairmen, Ganduje's Adviser In Kano State

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested two local government area chairmen in Kano State for allegedly sponsoring political violence and armed thuggery in the state.

The arrested persons are Bashir Kutama and Faizu Alfindiki, chairmen of Gwarzo and Kano municipal areas respectively.

Naija News understands a recent clash between the supporters of the two politicians resulted in their arrest by DSS operatives and the two politicians are currently under investigation by the secret police.

During the attack that resulted in their arrest, four persons were reportedly killed, while several others sustained injuries during a clash that occurred at the inauguration of officials of the APC for Kano southern senatorial zone in Rano.

Further information has it that the two local government chairmen are interested in succeeding Abdullahi Ganduje as the Kano State Governor.

A source at the DSS Kano command, who was quoted by The Cable to have spoken on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrest of the two chairmen and added that one adviser to Governor Ganduje was also arrested.

The source added that the chairman of Gwale local government area, Khalid Ishaq Diso is also facing the same allegation of sponsoring politcal violence.

“Yes, they have arrested Mr Faizu Alfindiki, the chairman of Kano municipal area and Bashir Abdullahi Kutama, chairman of Gwarzo local government area, over allegations of sponsoring highly-placed political thuggery in the state, culminating in attacks and subsequent killings,” the source said.

Malami, Amaechi, Ngige In Tight Corner As Senate Rejects Electoral Bill Amendment

The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige are in a tight corner following the rejection of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by the Senate on Wednesday.

The ministers would be hindered from participating in the All Progressives Congress primaries expect they resign from their appointment before May.

The bill, however, does not stop governors, deputy governors, Vice-President and members of the National Assembly from contesting in the primaries of their political.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari after signing the bill into law in February called on the National Assembly to amend Section 84 of the Electoral Act.

President Buhari in a plea forwarded to the National Assembly had argued that it was at variance with the constitution.

Section 84 of the electoral act stops political appointees from contesting in primaries, voting at any convention.

Section 84(10) of the Act specifically reads, “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

In the case where a political party allows political appointees to contest in party primaries, the politician would not be recognised in the election.

The Senate on Wednesday despite the ruling of a court stopping it from reviewing the bill rejected President Buhari’s request to amend the electoral act.

Lawmakers on Wednesday rejected the bill despite an attempt by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan to put the motion for its adoption for a second reading to a voice vote.

Senator Adamu Aliero had charged the Senate to step down the amendment of the Electoral Act after the Majority Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, moved the motion for the bill to be read a second time.

Aliero in his stand made reference to the provision of Rule 52(5) of the Standing Orders of the Senate.

Order 52(5) provides that, ‘Reference shall not be made to any matter on which a judicial decision is pending, in such a way as might in the opinion of the President of the Senate prejudice the interest of parties thereto.’

He advised lawmakers to step down the bill pending the vacation of the ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

According to Aliero, amending the Electoral Act would be sub judice.

The Senate President while ruling on Aliero’s motion claimed that the decision of Senators to amend the Act is to exercise the constitutional duties of the legislature.

The Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe on his part opposed the proposed deletion of Section 84(12) of the Act.

Abaribe said, “There are certain things that we see which we think we don’t even have to come here to debate. One of those things is the fact that in every democracy, all over the world, there are certain rules which we don’t need to be told about. One of those rules is the fact that you cannot be a referee and a player on the same field. It is either you’re a referee or a player.”

Senator Smart Adeyemi while speaking on the move to amend the bill said, “Indeed, it is a settled matter in law that you cannot be a judge over your own case.

“In any election, where people have the added advantage of holding executive power, either by proxy or directly or by appointment, for such people to have access and compete with others who came from the street, I think is an unjust society.

“Therefore, I disagree with all the arguments on the need to consider a decision that has already been settled.”

Senators, however, voted against the bill despite the effort by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, to sway the opinion of the lawmakers.

#BreakTheBias: Nigeria Must Not Be Missing In A Progressive New World Order

There was no missing March 8 on the global calendar for women. It has been forty-five years since the United Nations(UN) singled out that date to celebrate women, many years after being held under by a male-dominated world system.

The early signs of emancipation had come in the early 1900s when Soviet Russia granted women voting rights in 1917. Since then, and in spite of that act of tokenism, the world appears to have moved rather too slowly to erase the discrimination against women and attain much-desired gender equality.

The pace of progress towards parity has been particularly woeful in most developing societies, especially in Africa where the patriarchal system still looms large and women remain largely relegated to the background. It must be said, though, that Rwanda has stood out as a shining example, driven, perhaps, by the challenge to reinvent itself after a gruesome civil war that claimed thousands of lives.

The build-up to this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) had been quite remarkable, coming soon after the world began the early steps of recovering from a global pandemic that drove more African societies into an economic quandary and found its women taking up additional family responsibilities in order to contain the excruciating pangs of poverty.

Therefore, this year’s theme, #BreakTheBias, could not have been more apt. Not only had conversations around the event been very illuminating, but the engagements have also been very robust, especially in Nigeria where women in their thousands have, for several days, fiercely stood up to challenge the failure of government to systematically address the troubling issues of gender equality, and women’s rights, among others.

It was evident, given the events of March 1, 2022, that the women were not going to give up without a fight. On that day, lawmakers in Nigeria’s House of Representatives and the Senate, in separate resolutions, threw out five gender-related bills in the country’s bid to amend its constitution.

The bills would have had the salutary effect of
closing the perceived parity gap between men and women, notably in the area of access to political and socio-economic power. There had been hopes that the lawmakers would see reason, especially as incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha, had, in a historic move, led a women’s lobby group to speak to the gender bills. But all that was to fall flat in just one day of deliberations at the National Assembly.

The development did not come as a total surprise to anyone who had followed the country’s political space keenly. My immediate findings showed that Nigeria’s constitution barely referenced women, even in its wordings.

Another damming discovery was a report which presented Africa’s most populous country as having one of the continent’s lowest female representation in parliament, ranking 181 out of 193 nations. This is according to the International Parliamentary Union.

In more specific terms, my searches had also shown that in the current Nigerian 9th National Assembly, women occupy only 7 out of 109 Senate seats, and 11 out of 360 seats in the House of Representatives. A comparative review appears to reveal an uneven growth, with 3 female Senators reported in 1999; 4 in 2003; and 9 in 2007. In 2011 and 2015, the number of female Senators had sadly declined to 7 respectively.

Before the March 1 rejection by the 9th Assembly, the 8th Assembly had also acted its own script. For three years, between 2016 and 2019, it ensured that the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill (GEO) was frustrated and finally buried!

This writer is convinced that the most intricate game plan to keep women subjugated has been the rejection of the five gender bills which would have conveyed the following advantages on womenfolk:
—Citizenship to a foreign-born husband of a Nigerian woman, and vice versa
—Indigeneity through marriage
—20 per cent appointed positions for women
—35 percent affirmative action in party administration and leadership
—Extra seats for women at National Assembly

I still cannot fathom why Nigerian lawmakers acted the way they did before coming under intense pressure to rescind their positions. And, this is why my heart goes out to all women and other sympathizers who kept vigil to ensure that the travesty of injustice at the National Assembly was reversed.

The shift in position by members of the House of Representatives, though not radical, represents only but a symbolic gesture, if viewed critically. Here is why.

Of the five gender-related bills, it resolved to revisit three namely: bills to expand scope of citizenship by registration, affirmative action for women in political party administration and provision for criteria to be an indigene of a state in Nigeria.

The House cleverly left out the bills on extra seats for women in legislative houses and the 20 per cent quota for women for appointment into federal and states cabinets. Noteworthy is the fact that the Nigerian senate is yet to adjust its known position even in the face of the ongoing protests by women in the nation’s capital.

A less than smart move by the federal government to assuage the feelings of women came in the hurried revision of the National Gender Policy, just a day after lawmakers rejected the gender bills. The government had said it was driven by the higher ideals to promote gender equality, good governance and accountability across the three tiers of government in the country.

Even as the world celebrates women, it is clear to this writer that Nigeria faces the danger of operating in the fringes in the emerging progressive world order, as the government’s initiatives appear not far-reaching or half-hearted.

I am yet unconvinced that the reign of tokenism in our clime will effect the desired change needed to close the widening gulf between men and women, measured by access to opportunities across all human endeavours.

Perhaps, a significant leap would manifest in guarantees for equal employment opportunities, equal rights to inheritance, equal rights for women in marriage, equal access to education, and protection of rights of widows, among others.

One is constrained, therefore, to join the horde of courageous citizens, both women and men, speaking truth to power, and insisting that modern societies, Nigeria inclusive, must avoid discrimination against women and promote gender equality.

To this end, we must act quickly to overcome the euphoria of celebrations and continue to pile more pressure on recalcitrant politicians who have been blinded by an unprogressive patriarchal culture. To retreat is not an option at this time when Nigerian women have increasingly shown the capacity for leadership, not just locally but globally.

While these giant strides should be celebrated, staying focused on the ultimate goals remains the bigger task. I dare say that the centre stage is where Nigerian women are destined. Let us work to #BreakTheBias.

2023: Ohanaeze Sends Important Message To South-West, South-South Over Igbo Presidency

Igbo Presidency

Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Youth Council, has urged people of South-West and South-South to allow a South-east extraction of a Nigerian president in 2023 to reciprocate the latter’s political sacrifices to them, Naija News reports.

The national president of OYC, Comrade Igboayaka O.

Igboayaka said, “The overwhelming vote of South-East to President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and 2015 is a description of love and solidarity to our brothers in South-South. It will also amount to regional hatred and political sabotage if any South-South dares a South-east presidential aspirant in PDP primaries.

“Any presidential aspirants from South-South, South-West, North-East, North-Central and North-West are a threat to Nigeria’s unity.”

Breaking: NURTW Suspends MC Oluomo Indefinitely As Lagos Chairman

Breaking: NURTW Suspends MC Oluomo Indefinitely

The national leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has handed an indefinite suspension to its Lagos chapter’s Chairman, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly called Mc Oluomo.

According to the letter of suspension signed by the NURTW General Secretary, Kabiru Yau, MC Oluomo is guilty of insubordination and inciting members of the union against the national leadership.

The letter dated March 9, 2022, directed MC Oluomo to hand over all union properties in his care to the state secretary and hand over the leadership to his deputy.

Naija News recalls before the latest development that the NURTW had issued a letter of query to MC Oluomo but in his response, he denied every allegation against him.

He argued that all the allegations levelled against him were false and baseless, saying that he is a promoter of peace.

The popular NURTW stalwart said he has not disobeyed any of the laws guiding the union’s operations in his dealings with other affiliate unions as claimed in the query.

However, the NURTW in its letter of suspension said his response is not satisfactory.

The letter of suspension reads: “This is to convey to you that in line with Article 42 section 5, subsection I, II, III, IV, V, and VIII of the union’s constitution, you have been placed on indefinite suspension from office as State Chairman of Lagos State Council of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) with effect from March 9th, 2022.

“Your suspension is sequel to sustained acts of insubordination and gross misconduct coupled with your clandestine plans to instigate crisis and unleash mayhem on any branch or branches of the union in Lagos state that refuses to obey your order or instructions not to accept directives from the national headquarters of the Union.

“Your orchestrated plan to attack branches that may disobey your orders aforesaid will ultimately endanger public peace and order in Lagos state. It is also very likely to threaten and/or affect the lives and property of the peace-loving people of Lagos state, particularly those doing their legitimate businesses within motor parks, hence the urgent need to take drastic actions against him.

“It is on record that you were earlier issued with queries on 25th of February 2022 and 3rd of March, 2022 respectively in which you were directed to explain the circumstances surrounding your untoward actions and to also show cause why disciplinary actions should not be taken against you for such acts of insubordination. You bluntly neglected/refuse to respond to the second query, while your response to the first query was unsatisfactory.

“In view of your suspension, you are hereby directed to hand over the mantle of leadership of the Lagos State Council to the State Deputy Chairman and also surrender all Union properties in your possession to the State Secretary of the Union forthwith”.

2023: Nigerians Hate APC, Willing To Bet On PDP – Ohuabunwa

2023: Nigerians Hate APC, Willing To Bet With PDP - Ohuabunwa

Former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Sam Ohuabunwa has observed that the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, may not get the support of Nigerians in the coming 2023 general elections, Naija News reports.

According to him, citizens have tested the leadership of the incumbent government and it is bitter to them.

The former chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group said though the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are not liked too, citizens are willing to bet on the party come 2023.

Ohuabunwa said: “They are looking at PDP to present their best feet out. They are looking for PDP to present a new paradigm. They want the PDP to reinvent itself to show something new and something different from what they have seen in the past.”

Naija News reports that the 2023 Presidential hopeful stated this in Abuja on Tuesday when he met with the party’s National Assembly Minority Caucus.

Ohuabunwa had sought the support of the minority caucus as he declared his intention to emerge as PDP flagbearer in the 2023 presidential election.

With the hope that he could get a chance to contribute his quota to the growth of the nation, Ohuabunwa noted that the PDP must put its best foot forward to regain power in the coming election.

He noted that research has shown that Nigerians don’t like PDP but they hate APC.

Ohuabunwa added: “But Nigerians having tested APC and PDP leadership at the national level, they are willing to bet with PDP. It doesn’t matter whether I am the one that ends up becoming the party’s nominee or the candidate, but Nigerians are looking up to the PDP to do the right thing.

“They are looking at PDP to present their best feet out. They are looking for PDP to present a new paradigm. They want the PDP to reinvent itself to show something new and something different from what they have seen in the past.”

In his address, the Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, lauded Ohuabunwa’s passion for a better Nigeria.

He said: “We can see in your discussion how you want Nigeria to be better than it is today. That is what each of us wants for Nigeria. We want to wish you well and tell you to March on. As you go, remember that the National Assembly is part of those that will make your journey easier.”

Meanwhile, the minority leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, charged all PDP Presidential aspirants to compete peacefully.

Elumelu said the party needs to be united to oust the governing All Progressives Congress in 2023.

He said, “let us unite ourselves. It is only when we are united that we can have a course to take over from the APC. So let us advise our supporters not to abuse anybody but to preach peace and bring everybody together.”

El-Rufai Opens Up On Preferred Successor To Take Over From Him As Kaduna State Governor

El-Rufai Opens Up On Preferred Successor To Take Over From Him As Kaduna State Governor

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has stated that he prefers someone from the ‘core team’ to take over from him as State Governor in 2023.

Though he denied anointing any particular person, El-Rufai said despite having a personal preference, it’s not solely up to him to choose his successor.

He explained further that he would prefer someone from the ‘core team’ because this represents a group of people who have been working with him since 2014 and understand the plans of policies of government hence, continuity would not be a challenge.

Governor El-Rufai stated that the leadership in Kaduna State will continue to discuss and rub minds with stakeholders to ensure a worthy successor emerges in 2023.

“I’ve not. I’ve not anointed anybody. Stories go round.

“There are some that say I’ve anointed my deputy governor and there are some that say I’ve anointed my Commissioner for Finance and there are some that say I’ve anointed my Commissioner of budget and planning, there are all kinds of stories arounds, but…I don’t want to anoint anyone,” El-Rufai declared during a Channels TV interview session on Wednesday.

“I think the leadership…our first eleven as I called it, the core leadership of Kaduna State would sit and debate this and see whether we can come up with one person we think is a worthy successor and what that person would do to carry the rest of the team together.

“We have our core team. We’ve started meeting regularly and even our senators join from Kaduna. We discuss this regularly and at some point, we’re going to make that decision, but we’ve not anointed anyone.

“If I tell you I don’t have preferences I would be lying. I do have preferences but because I’m human, even though I have preferences, I’m still praying that God chooses the right person for Kaduna State.

“Because for me, Kaduna is more important than anything, including myself, friendship and any preferences I may have and I’m human only God knows the best person to succeed me. I’m only human.

“My preference is in our core team, that is the first eleven. I said core team because these are the guys that worked with me since 2014 to organize our party, organized our campaign and we won and got elected.

“So, they know all the policies we formulated and implemented. So, they’ll not come and have about-turn changing direction.

“This is why I said our core team. Some are in the cabinet and some are in the National Assembly, but we have our core team and we’ll keep discussing. The reason I want someone from our team to succeed us is because I want continuity,” he added.

No Policeman Died In My Convoy – Fashola

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has debunked claims that policemen died during an accident in his convoy.

Recall that reports had emerged that four policemen were reported dead after the convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari‘s Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari; Fashola; and the Minister in Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, crashed.

The crash reportedly occurred on Tuesday evening during the inspection of a bridge in Asaba, Delta State.

However the Minister’s Special Adviser on Communications, Hakeem Bello issued a rebuttal on Wednesday night.

The aide stated that there was no fatal crash during the inspection of the Second Niger by a Federal Government Team led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari.

The team comprised Fashola, Labour Minister Chris Ngige and Managing Director, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Uche Orji.

He said that when they arrived at the Asaba Airport in Delta, they visited the Interchange, along Owerri-Onitsha Road and the East approach to the Bridge in Onitsha, and walked across to the West approach.

It was discovered much later that one of the vehicles in the Team of the Commissioner of Police from Anambra State had a mishap during which two policemen sustained injuries.

“It was confirmed from the Nigeria Police, Anambra State Command that they were treated at the Federal Medical Centre Asaba and had since been discharged,” he said.
