The Federal Government is set to ground aeroplanes over the inability of local airlines to operate them optimally.
Naija News reports that the Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Nuhu Musa made this known on Thursday during his appearance before the House of Representatives.
The NCAA boss said the authority might be forced to take the painful decision due to the rising cost of JetA1, also called aviation fuel.
Musa noted that the rise in the price of aviation fuel had led to a spike in the cost of the operations of airlines which is not economical for the airline operators.
He pointed out that if the aviation sector should crash today, many other sectors of the economy would stop operations in a matter of time.
He said, “Fuel is to be about 30 per cent; as of today, it has gone to about 50 per cent under the cost of operations. As the regulator of the industry, this is of significant concern for me, not only for the inconveniences caused to the travelling public in terms of flight delays and cancellations.
“It is also a significant safety concern to us because if airlines cannot have enough financial margin to comply with all the mandatory requirements, then it is something that we really may have to look at.
“God forbid, I don’t want to come before this committee explaining why A or B happened. Every day, it increases. Sir, I won’t be surprised tomorrow if it is selling for N700 per litre. Every day it is increasing by between N20 to N30. Yesterday, it was N635. Today, it is N670.
“Considering the cost of air tickets now, the airline industry cannot survive. It is either we shut them down because they cannot generate enough revenue to operate safely. We are not even talking about cancellations and delays; we are talking about the safety of flight operations.
“It is the responsibility of the (Nigerian) Civil Aviation Authority and I am fully responsible for the safe operations. We hope the honourable House can help us find a solution to resolve this matter. Aviation is critical to the economy of Nigeria.”
Domestic Airlines To Shut Down Operations Over Aviation Fuel Scarcity
Meanwhile, Nigerian domestic airlines have said they might be forced to suspend operations due to a hike in the price of aviation fuel.
Speaking on behalf of Airlines Operators of Nigeria, on Thursday, Allen Onyeama, chairman of Air Peace Airline, said airlines were now buying fuel at N670 per litre, up from N190 at the end of last year.
He said, “Unfortunately, the fuel scarcity is starting to seriously impact our operations as we are likely going to experience flight disruption today and in the coming days until the situation abates. The aviation fuel crisis is taking a new turn and has continued to affect our operations.
“If the prices of aviation fuel keep rising at the rate they are moving, we are not sure we will survive the next 72 hours.”

Sadu Bunkawu, a self-confessed kidnapper who rejected a share of N200,000 from a ransom of N12 million has reported his fellow gang members to the police.
According to Daily Post, the kidnapper disclosed that his gang abducted one Umaru Diffiwa and Umaru Babidi recieving a ransom of N12 million, but expressed sadness after he was given only two hundred thousand from a twelve million naira ransom which went missing on his way back home.
Describing his share as a product of high level injustice, Bunkawu said, he expects the police to correct the injustice.
He went ahead to allege that the other six members of the kidnapping gang conspired and gave him the N200, 000 only out of the huge N12 million they collected as ransom.
“I lost my share of the money while rushing to reach home on time,” Bunkawu said.
“The money was paid to seven of us by the family members of the victims. After releasing them, I was called and given N200,000 only,” he explained.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ehilebo Anthony has said that the ruling All Progressives Congress should by now be begging the opposition party to take over leadership, Naija News reports.
The PDP’s director of New Media admonished the ruling party to immediately shelve its ambition of retaining power in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.
Anthony while interacting with newsmen on Thursday, make a mockery of the ongoing leadership turbulence rocking the ruling party, suggesting that they should be more concerned about getting things right within themselves and not talk about taking over.
According to him, the APC has failed to succeed in the last few years and have not been able to have a management system and President Muhammadu Buhari was comfortable with it all along.
“So, how has the party been functioning? How has the party been able to derive feedback mechanism?” Anthony asked.
“APC shouldn’t even be thinking of 2023. They have to take a pause and organize themselves. They can still meet the PDP and say, ‘you know what, because we have looked at ourselves, and we are not ready for now, take over,“‘ he stressed.
Speaking on party leadership, Anthony said it is insulting to make a comparison between the APC and the opposition party.
He noted that the embattled Chairman of the party’s Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Mai Mala Bunias an incumbent governor, was never qualified for the position.
“It’s unfair to compare APC to PDP. It is just like two children going to a federal government college. One has been going to class, doing all his assignments while the other does not.
“Who is going to resolve Osun for APC? Is it Buni? Is it Lolo? Is it my friend, Buma Galadima who is the reformed APC chairman? So, which chairman are you going to believe now? Because none of these chairmen is constitutional.
“Buni was never supposed to be a chairman. How can you be a governor and you are a party chairman? What a charade of nonsense!”
Naija News reports that the PDP chieftain warned further that the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami should be careful.
According to him, no AGF has served Nigeria among the last 3 AGFs that has not either been shamed or removed.
“A serving Attorney General of the federation is the one that is swearing-in party chairmen. It’s not as if these guys did not see how a party is operated”, he added.

The Ebonyi State High Court has granted an interim order to Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State and his Deputy, Kelechi Igwe, stopping their removal from office.
The order was secured following the ex-parte motion filed by counsel to the duo, Roy Umahi, pursuant to rule 3(3) of the High Court rules of Ebonyi state in suit no HAB/13/22.
Recall that the Abuja Federal High Court on Tuesday ordered their sack for dumping the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressive Congress.
The court also ordered the PDP to present another candidate or the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should conduct a fresh election within 90 days.
In the motion filed by their lawyer, the governor and his deputy approached the Ebonyi High Court, arguing that its ruling should take precedence over that of the ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The duo asked the court to declare that its judgement of the 28th February 2022 on their defection to APC remains valid as a judgement in rem and as such should have precedence over any other contrary judgement and should be binding on all parties, persons and authorities.
In his ruling, Justice Henry Njoku granted the prayers sought by the duo and ruled that Umahi and his deputy shall accordingly remain and not be removed from office.
The judge, however, adjourned the matter to March 16 for a hearing on the motion on notice.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi and his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, have asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to stay execution of the judgment ordering their removal from office.
This development comes after the governor and his deputy on Wednesday appealed the court ruling that sacked them from office.
Umahi and Igwe disagreed with the ruling of the court in suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/920/2021 filed at the Abuja Judicial Division of the Appellate Court.
In a motion on notice filed by their lead counsel, Chukwuma-Ma-Chukwu Ume, Umahi and Igwe prayed the court to stay the execution of the judgment against them, pending the hearing and determination of their appeal.
The governor and his deputy also asked the court to suspend the alternative order that directed INEC to conduct a fresh poll in the state within the next three months.
Umahi and Igwe also prayed to the court to stay execution of the order that mandated INEC to receive names of PDP candidates to replace them, as well as the order that restrained the electoral body from further recognising them as the governor and deputy governor of Ebonyi, respectively.
The duo applied for an order to restrain the PDP from submitting any names to the INEC and if already submitted and accepted, to issue an order of injunction, restraining INEC from issuing certificate of return or putting same into effect, pending the conclusion of the appeal.
Their application premised on order 26 rules 1 and 2(1) and order 32 rules 1 and 4(1) of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019, was predicated on eight grounds.
Umahi and his deputy informed the court that being unsatisfied with the judgment, they have filed an appeal to challenge it.
The duo claimed that the notice of appeal had been properly served on all parties and that they had already started the process of compiling and transmitting the appeal’s data.
They claimed that allowing the court’s ruling to be carried out before the outcome of the ongoing appeal would compromise their rights.

A family in the Iwo town of Osun State has been left in mourning after yet be identified persons killed their daughter, Shakirat.
Reports made available to newsmen revealed that parts of the lady’s body have been harvested by the suspected ritualists.
The assailants suspected to be ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ boys (internet fraudsters) had dumped Shakirat’s remains behind her mummy’s shop at Oke-Oore, Naija News learnt.
A resident of the community who identified himself as Adeola had told Daily Post that the body of the 22-year-old lady was discovered around 8 am, suspecting that she was killed by Yahoo boys.
The operatives of the Nigeria Police Force are said to have visited the scene and conveyed the mutilated body to General Hospital Iwo.
Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola confirmed the incident, saying investigation had begun, Naija News reports.
“We wanted to carry out an autopsy on her but the family insisted that we release her body to them,” Opalola said.
The 30-year-old was murdered during a fight for supremacy between two cult groups.
The deceased got married to his wife, Belepeigha Gloria Oyins last year July.
His wife who was pregnant during the ceremony later gave birth to a baby boy.

The Presidency has asked Nigerians to appreciate President Muhammadu Buhari for the success recorded so far in the fight against insurgency.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, made this known on Friday in his article titled “THE STORY THAT DIDN’T HUG THE HEADLINES.”
Adesina accused the Nigerian media of paying less attention to the achievements of Buhari, particularly those bordering on wins against insecurity.
The presidential aide said the success recorded by the Buhari administration was noticed by The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an international and independent think-tank.
He pointed out that the institute in its Global Terrorism Index 2022 report said there was a 72 percent decrease in the death caused by Boko Haram in Nigeria.
Adesina said that the media and Nigerians kept mum about the report and failed to commend the Buhari government for the success recorded in insecurity.
The presidential aide said that if the case was different, Nigerians would have condemned President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He, however, added that Nigerians who exhibit loud silence about positive developments are hypocrites and haters of their country.
The full article reads: “A story broke last week that you would think would be everywhere, topic of discussion on both traditional and new media. But not a murmur, nor a whisper. In fact, mum was the word in many quarters.
“What was the story? The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an international and independent, not-for-profit think-tank, released what it calls Global Terrorism Index 2022. And it had this to say about Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA):
“There was a ten per cent improvement in terrorism deaths in SSA. The improvement can be attributed to the successful counter-insurgency operations targeting Boko Haram where deaths caused by the group declined by 72 per cent between 2020 and 2021, from 629 deaths to 178 deaths. Nigeria recorded the second-biggest reduction in deaths. This is more than the overall decrease in terrorism deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa. Attacks by the group also significantly decreased, halving from the prior year to 64 attacks.”
“The truth is that a single wanton death is one too many anywhere. But when in a country that had suffered thousands of deaths yearly since Boko Haram emerged in 2009, killings now reduced by 72 percent, it is a very significant development. It is something that should hug the headlines, dominate the talk shows, go viral on social media, and be of interest to social commentators. But not a murmur, nor a whisper, as I said earlier. As if in a conspiracy of silence, nobody talked about the report. The media didn’t report it, and those that did, superciliously tucked it away in a place where you would need to put on the torchlight before you would see it.
“Now, just imagine that the same report had indicated that there was a spike in Boko Haram killings in Nigeria, with the carnage exceeding that of the previous year by 100 percent. All hell would have broken loose. It would be lead headline in most publications. Some television stations would scroll the story in their news bar round the clock, for many days.
“It would be the topic of discussion on morning and evening discussion programs. We would be almost deafened by the cacophony. So-called security experts and social activists would be invited, and they would be pontificating all day.
“Why do we as a people show more interest in the negative, rather than positive news? Bandits killed scores of vigilantes in Kebbi this week, and the news was everywhere. But last week, security agencies had neutralized minimum of 200 bandits in Niger State, and it was nothing to play up. It did not resonate in the media, traditional or new. Not a murmur, nor a whisper. Strange. Very strange.
“President Muhammadu Buhari came our way in 2015, promising to secure the country, revive the economy, and fight corruption. Rather than encourage him, what some people had been engaged in is sticking a pin into the soft underbelly of the various wars. No plaudits. No bravo. No encouragement. He didn’t do this, he didn’t do that, is all they are interested in. The economy recorded 3.4% growth last year, the best since 2014, no murmur, no whisper.
“The anti-corruption war has seen convictions in thousands between 2015 and now, yet, what interests some people is how the war is allegedly selective, even without a scintilla of evidence. And when there are strides in the battle against insecurity, their narrative remains the same. Oh, life is nasty, brutish, and short here.
“Yes, we still have severe security challenges. But are we where we used to be? Don’t we see a fulfillment of promises by President Buhari that he would ensure that the vermin of insecurity is extirpated in the country? The pessimists have not changed their tongues, nor their minds, despite the positive strides being attained.
“The report by IEP says Nigeria recorded the lowest number of killings last year, since 2011. No murmur, no whisper.
“We should rather applaud the President and our security agencies for the yeoman’s job they are doing. May God bless Baba Buhari. And our troops. Our policemen. National Security and Civil Defence Corps. Everyone fights evil, so that the citizens can live in peace. May God bless them.
“When you exhibit loud silence about positive developments in your country and scream blue murder when there are reversals, you are a hypocrite, a hater of your country, and a hater of all that is good. Sad, dolorous, mournful.
“Despite the security challenges we still have, the truth is that we are not where we used to be. Chief of Defence Staff, General LEO Irabor said it just last week. True. And we will get to where we want to be. The job will get done. And we will join Mungo Park to enthuse when he ‘discovered’ the River Niger: ‘I saw with infinite pleasure the great object of my mission-the long sought for majestic Niger, glittering to the morning sun.’
“Nigeria has sought peace for long, from insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and all sorts of criminality. We will see the peace, glittering to the morning sun.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied knowledge of the leadership change in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
It was gathered that INEC made this known on Thursday in a letter sent to Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello of Niger, who is the acting chairman of the party’s caretaker committee.
The officials pleaded not to be named disclosed that Sani-Bello had on Wednesday written to INEC in his capacity as the acting national chairman of the APC’s Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) inviting the commission to their National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for next week Thursday via zoom.
Sources confirmed to Daily Trust that the APC had send a letter to the electoral commission revealing a change of guard from Governor Mai Mala Buni to Sani Bello.
“Yes, there was a letter from the APC, which the commission replied because there were legal issues…They did not do the right thing,” one of the officials of the electoral body said.
Another official said INEC in the reply told the ruling party that it was only the national chairman and national secretary of the party that could write such a letter.
This means that the commission was yet-to-be be formally notified of the leadership change in APC.
Which in-turn means the new leadership led by Governor Bello cannot formally write INEC for official matters.
The Electoral Act 2022 in Article 82 (1) recently signed by President Muhammadu Buhari stated that: Every registered political party shall give the commission at least 21 days’ notice of any convention, congress, conference or meeting convened for the purpose of “merger” and electing members of its executive committees, other governing bodies or nominating candidates for any of the elective offices specified under this Act.
Recall that the Niger State Governor had on Monday take over the leadership of the APC, claiming he has the backing of PresidentBuhari.
Confirming the change of leadership, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State said Buni who is on a medical trip in Dubai had been removed and won’t return as chairman.
El-Rufai accused the Yobe governor of widening crisis in the party, claiming that those loyal to Buni had obtained a court order to stop the APC convention from holding.
Also, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State had accused Buni and some ‘yahoo yahoo‘ governors of trying to destroy the APC.
Backing Buni, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State had said the Yobe governor will return as the party chairman after his medical trip.
Speaking to his supporters, the embattled governor insisted that there was no crisis in the ruling party.

According to the lady, who is former sales girl at a shop in Ajah, after she closed from work around 8pm, she boarded the BRT bus driven by the suspect.
She said Nice was to convey her from the Alesh Bus Stop in Ajah, to Jakande, along the Lekki Epe Expressway, when he decided to park the bus and rape her, armed with a nice.
“While on our way, he switched off the light of the bus, but the AC was on. But as we approached the first toll gate coming from Ajah, he suddenly parked the bus. He then told me to come and sit at the front and started asking me different questions,” she said.
“I saw him using a drug and my thinking was that he parked the bus to use the drug before time ran out. A few minutes later, he started making advances towards me and I saw that his manhood had risen up. I became very uncomfortable and insisted on getting down, but he didn’t open the door.
“He said he wanted both of us to go and chill and that he wanted to have sex with me, but I declined. Suddenly, he brought out a knife and dragged me to the back seat of the bus. He told me to take off my clothes, but I refused. He threatened to kill me. He tore my gown, forcefully removed the biker short I wore and raped me. I felt sad.”
She added, “He insisted on driving me to my destination at Jakande Bus Stop. When we got to my bus stop, he still didn’t open the door. He demanded my account number and started pleading over what he did. He said he wanted to send money to me to buy painkillers.
“I refused to give him my account, but he kept demanding and refused to open the door. Before he raped me, he seized my phone, and because I needed evidence, I gave him my account and he sent N3,000. He then opened the door and I left.
“I could not speak out because I was ashamed of what happened and believed I could not get justice. But when his pictures started circulating online regarding the death of the lady (Oluwabamise), I told my friend that I knew him (Omininikoron).
“After seeing his coloured picture, I went to my bank, requested my statement of account, traced the day he sent me the money, and it was the same name, Omininikoron Nice, which was in the picture circulating.
“I told my friend about it and she introduced me to a rights activist. Some people may question me for speaking out now, but I am speaking out because of the girl. That man must not be freed because he is responsible for what happened.”
It was gathered that the lady provided a statement of account which confirmed Omininikoron sent N3,000 to her on November 25, 2021.
She also shared a video clip of her torn clothes.
When contacted the Lagos State Police Spokesperson, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, asked the victim to report the case at any police station or Panti, in Yaba.
“If the victim has a case against him, she should report at the nearest police station or the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, and it will be investigated,” he said.
