The embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has not been removed or replaced, his family has said.
It was claimed that Kanu had been replaced with one Sofia Chinyere Kalu as the new leader of the Biafra group in the United Kingdom.
According to reports, Kalu who is the group’s Financial Secretary in the UK had reportedly taken the position of Kanu, who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Security Service, DSS.
This development was confirmed by a separatist who manages IPOB and Radio Biafra Community Interest Companies (CIC) Registry in London, UK, Ezeji Chukwuma and a self-styled disciple of Kanu, Simon Ekpa.
Reacting to the reports, the brother of the IPOB leader, Kingsley ‘Kanunta’ Kanu denied claims that his elder brother had been removed from his position.
In a tweet via his Twitter handle on Friday, Kanunta said Mrs Kalu has not been appointed as the new leader of the proscribed group as widely reported.
He wrote: “#MaziNnamdiKanu is the ONLY leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
“We should learn to address issues and not to create one because we’ve lost men in this struggle and we are still losing men.
“A butterfly can never call itself a bird. Biafra is a spirit.”

Presidential hopeful, Dele Momodu has slammed the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) over the creation of a directorate of politics and governance.
In a memo dated February 28, which was signed by the Assistant General Overseer (Admin/Personnel) Pastor J. F. Odesola, the church announced the creation of the directorate for politics and governance ahead of the 2023 general elections.
The RCCG stated that the newly-created directorate, which will be headed by Pastor Timothy Olaniyan, is to coordinate the affairs and activities of members interested in seeking political offices in 2023.
In a statement on Friday, the church denied setting up its directorate to support the purported 2023 presidential ambition of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo or any church member.
Reacting to the development, Momodu said the creation of the directorate by the leadership of the church was nothing but an invitation to Armageddon.
The media entrepreneur said the setting up of the political arm of the church was unnecessary, warning the church leadership not to mix religion with politics.
Momodu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also linked the purported presidential ambition of Osinbajo to the setting up of the directorate.
The full statement reads below:
“Fellow Nigerians, let me state clearly that I consider myself a bonafide member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) even if I don’t attend church services regularly due to my absence from home arising from my enforced itinerant lifestyle as an international journalist. For clarity, I have lived partly in England since about 27 years ago when I was forced into exile by the Abacha military regime in July 1995. Once we settled into our home in Cricklewood more than two decades ago, my Family and I attended the JESUS HOUSE in Brent Cross, the headquarters of the RCCG in the United Kingdom, ably led by Pastor Agu Irukwu, a respected and respectable gentleman. Indeed, I celebrated my 50th birthday at JESUS HOUSE on May 16, 2010, and I felt truly blessed. My Family still attend the Church to this day and whenever I am in England on Sundays, I venture to attend too.
“Beyond this, I have been a son of our General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye and his very selfless wife, our Mummy G O, Mrs Foluke Adenike Adeboye for many years. I take this opportunity to congratulate Daddy G O on the occasion of his 80th birthday which occurred on 3rd March 2022. I pray for longer life in good health with much happiness, prosperity contentment and peace. Their first son, Adeolu Adeboye, is also very close to me, right from our time in England. I have had the privilege of sailing on.a cruise ship with Daddy and Mummy for a full week from Florida to Cozumel in Mexico to Cayman Island to Ocho Rios in Jamaica. Mummy had given me tips on that exquisite trip on how to improve the sales of Ovation and I was truly gratified and grateful.
“Naturally, I feel that I owe it a duty to tell our Church leaders, and our Church in general, the Gospel truth and nothing but the absolute truth. In the light of my relationship with the RCCG, this duty is even more imperative and compelling. I believe the leaders of the RCCG have laboured so hard to build one of the most formidable churches in the world. Nothing must be done to inadvertently cause a cataclysmic storm in the House of God. And the easiest way to create trouble in Nigeria today is any attempt to mix religion with politics. It goes beyond lighting the blue touch paper. It is like combining some highly combustible ingredients together in a chemical laboratory. It is not just that the effect may not be too pleasant, it is that the result and consequences will be catastrophic. God forbid.
“As soon as I read the memo establishing a political arm of our Church, I realised this was nothing but an invitation to Armageddon, if true. For that reason, at first, I assumed the memo was a joke, a fake document that was merely meant to stir the hornets’ nest, so I did not pay too much attention to it. However, when it started flying in from every direction to my phones, I knew someone had touched the tiger by the tail. I started working the phones to speak to a few contacts who should know about it and be able to confirm the veracity or otherwise of the document. The outcome was a resounding yes, the document had emanated from the Church and was acquiesced to by the upper echelons.
“I asked for what the motive(s) could have been, and the general conspiracy theory was that our church was setting up an extensive network for the obvious Presidential ambition of the current Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, although couched in terms which ostensibly suggested that the Church wished to support all of its congregation who wished to contest the next general elections and made their aspirations known to the newly formed Church department. Personally, that theory didn’t jell with me. To the best of my knowledge, Professor Osinbajo is not the only member of the church contesting the Presidential election. And it was not the church that nominated him as running mate to President Muhammadu Buhari. He got the job primarily because of his closeness to his former Principal, then Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and also because of his admirable credentials, ability and capacity. His religion was necessarily a factor, because a Northern Moslem must perforce pick a Southern Christian as his running mate in the current Nigerian clime. That was the only reason religion came into it, I believe. It had nothing to do with the fact that he is a senior pastor of the RCCG.
“Even if the Vice President has now decided to bear his own father’s name.by dropping that of his avuncular godfather, the church will still face a moral crisis if it wishes to jump on the bandwagon by drumming up support for Professor Osinbajo on religious grounds alone for many reasons, some of which I will now highlight.
“Although Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a Muslim, his dear beloved wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu is a staunch member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and one of the leading lights of the Church. Asiwaju, her husband, is a frontline Presidential aspirant on the platform of APC, just like his godson, the Vice President. Even if the RCCG has a preference in Professor Osinbajo, mainly because of his status in the Church and his current position in Government, I expect the RCCG to “pretend” a little and behave as if it is not so. Not to do that would be tantamount to picking a child out of one’s children and say, “this is my favourite!” It is simply not right or proper for the RCCG to demonstrate such blatant and flagrant partisanship.
“As if that is not a tough cookie to handle, there is the fact that that there is a third contender, yours truly, Dele Momodu, who’s also a member of the RCCG and the youngest of the contending Church aspirants so far. I’m also the only member of the RCCG aspiring on the platform of PDP, as far as I know. Would the Church then ask its congregation to vote for one party over the other merely because it has decided to support one candidate in preference to the other regardless of the strong points one may have over the other? What a conundrum and crisis this portends for the Church and its unity and peace.
“The church cannot even afford to ostracise any aspirant on the basis of religious persuasion or denomination. It is the job of the church to seek out and promote the best candidates and then pray for them and galvanise support for them perhaps clandestinely.
“I also imagine that there is some degree of unconstitutionality to this attempt by the RCCG to descend into the political arena. Nigeria is a secular state as the constitution provides. To suggest that one candidate is the preferred candidate of a particular church or religious group and is being effectively sponsored by that church will breach not just the morality and ethos of the Church but also the deeply enshrined principles and grundnorm of our constitution, which are embedded and engraved for good reason.
“Furthermore, there are no guarantees that being a church Pastor or otherwise would make you a competent and truthfully honest leader. The church is too massive and extremely influential to reduce itself to such a level of myopia. Since what most Nigerians desire today is good and accountable leadership, our Churches should smartly work towards identifying the best materials in different political parties and support us spiritually and materially from the humongous resources it has pleased God to bless them with.
“Specifically, it is my belief that our churches should avoid anything that could further escalate the huge religious and socio-political conflagration already ravaging our long-suffering nation. Just imagine what would happen if other church denominations or other religions decide to support their own members only. It would be palpable anarchy in the making. Nigeria will then end up with a Babel of voices and a cacophony of noises which would not augur well for the wellbeing of us all, but only cause misery and upheaval.
“I sincerely hope and pray that our Church, the RCCG, will douse this unnecessary fire and recant and retrace its steps before it is too late.”

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has moved the conduct of its zonal congresses from March 12 to March 26, 2022.
Naija News reports that the interim spokesman of the Caretaker Committee and APC Youth Leader, Ismaeel Ahmed, made this known at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday.
Ahmed said the zonal congresses will hold the same day billed for its national convention, adding that preparations toward the success of the national convention are in top gear.
He added that the list for the party’s national convention sub-committees was reduced because the previous one was unnecessary which he said could reduce their efficiency.
He said: “35 state chairmen of the APC and that of the FCT were sworn in and mandated to work towards ensuring unity and harmony in their states. They were also charged to mobilise the members and the people to enable the party to win future elections.
“The CECPC received and deliberated on the report of the committee on zoning. After exhaustively deliberating on the report, it was approved and the zoning formula was made public.
“The CECPC assigned schedules of specific responsibilities to each member of the caretaker committee aligned to the existing directorates at the party’s headquarters. The purpose is to ensure speedy execution of the various activities leading to the national convention on March 26, 2022.
“The exercise has the additional benefit of ensuring synergy between the leadership of the party and the directorates.”

The Muhammadu Buhari-led government has shut down some illegal financial institutions operating in some parts of Lagos State.
Naija News reports that the illegal financial institutions were shut down following customers’ complaints of malpractices and invasion of privacy.
In a chat with reporters on Friday, the Chief Executive Officer, Federal Competition Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Babatunde Irukera, said the illegal online banks were situated in Opebi Road, Ikeja area of Lagos.
Irukera listed some of the illegal quick loan companies raided as GoCash, Okash, EasyCredit, Kashkash, Speedy Choice, Easy Moni.
He disclosed that the raid was carried out by FCCPC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Nigerian Police Force.
Irukera said the illegal institutions were accused of violating customers’ privacy in their debt recovery drive, adding that investigations into the allegations started two years.
The FCCPC boss noted that the interest rate charged by online banks appear to violate the ethics of how lending is done.
He said, “This information started quite a while ago. Some time ago, when the country was on lockdown in 2020 due to the pandemic, we started seeing the rise in money lenders”
“Because there was lockdown due to the pandemic, people needed small easy loan which is understandable. But over a period of time, people started complaining about the malpractices of the lenders, so we started tracking it”
“Towards the end of last year, we gathered quite a lot of information. We started working with some other key agencies and the FCCPC led the meeting where we all agreed there would be a joint effort to look into these businesses.
“The key two things that were subject of concern were what seems to be the naming and shaming violation of people’s privacy with respect to how these lenders recover their loans.
“Secondly, the interest rate seems to be a violation of the ethics on how lending is done. So, those were the two things that we set out to look for.
“So, we started an investigation trying to determine the location of these firms. That has been a very difficult thing. We did that for several months and some of them have moved from one place to the another and we have been visiting these places for months”
Irukera said investigations had revealed that the loan firms were neither Nigerian companies nor registered in the country, adding that many of the online banks are actually operated by the same person.
He disclosed that the commission had written to global app companies asking them to suspend the operations of the online banks.
“We found out that most of these companies operate from the same place. We also found out that many of them are actually operated by the same person. They are not Nigerian companies, they don’t have an address in Nigeria and they are not registered in Nigeria with the Corporate Affairs Commission and they do not have any licence to do their business.
“Essentially, what they have is an app, and so we started gathering more information about them. We engaged the public and the people who had been their victims. They gave us more information,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied receiving any letter informing it of a leadership change in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Naija News had reported that Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State had claimed in a leaked letter he forwarded to the Governor of Niger State, Sani Bello that he has transferred power to him before his medical trip to Dubai.
But the acting national chairman of the APC’s Caretaker Committeedenied receiving any letter from his Yobe State counterpart, saying that power was not transferred to him by Buni before travelling abroad.
On Wednesday, Bello wrote a letter to INEC, inviting the commission to the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for next week Thursday.
In response to Bello’s letter, the commission said it was not aware of a leadership change in the APC and that it cannot approve the ruling party’s upcoming national convention.
Speaking with Daily Trust on Friday, INEC’s spokesman, Festus Okoye, said the commission did not receive any communication from the APC regarding the transfer of powers.
He stated that only the duo of Buni and the secretary of the caretaker committee, Sen John James Akpanudoedehe, could write to the commission on behalf of the party.
Okoye said the commission asked the APC to comply with the provisions of the constitution, the Electoral Act and the commission’s guidelines.
Okoye said, “We did not receive any formal letter from the National Chairman of APC transferring power or duties.
“All registered political parties are obligated to comply with the provisions of the constitution, the Electoral Act and the Regulations and Guidelines of the Commission.
“We asked the Party to note the issues raised in our letter for compliance.”

Frank Udeme, one of the co-defendants of the convicted notorious kidnapper, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, has been jailed for five years.
Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Ikeja Special Offences Court sentenced Udeme to Kirikiri Correctional Centre, Lagos State for selling firearms to Evans.
The suspect, who had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge levelled against him, said he sold two AK47 and 270 AK47 live ammunition to Evans.
In her ruling, the trial judge, Justice Taiwo ruled that the sentence started from the day he was remanded in custody.
Earlier, the counsel to the third defendant, A. B. Josiah, had notified the court about the defendant’s change of plea.
The charge was re-read to the defendant and he pleaded guilty to counts six and seven.
The Director of Directorate of Public Prosecution, Dr Babatunde Martins, told the court that the third defendant admitted to having sold two AK47 and 270 AK47 live ammunition to Evans.
Martins said Udeme, who hails from Itan-kotoromu in Ika Local Government of Akwa-Ibom, made a statement on July 7, 2017, admitted to the offence.
However, Josiah in his allocutus, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, noting that the defendant had no prior criminal record.
Evans, Frank Udeme, Joseph Ikenna and Chiemeka Arinze were arraigned on a seven-count charge of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to kidnap and selling of firearms.
They were alleged to have attempted to kidnap Chief Vincent Obianodo, Chairman of the Young Shall Grow Motors on Aug. 27, 2013.
It was also reported that one of the defendants, Arinze passed away on Nov. 26, 2021, as a result of cardiopulmonary arrest caused by Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Justice Taiwo adjourned the case until March 28 for the continuation of the trial of the remaining two defendants.

In an interview with Daily Trust on Saturday, Attahiru said he was going to an event when his convoy was attacked by the bandits, adding that the terrorists killed some persons and kidnapped him and others.
The monarch pointed out that the bandits took the victims into the bush and they made them walk for two days before arriving at their camp.
Attahiru disclosed that he spent 32 days in their camp, stressing that they were kept in an open place where it was raining day and night.
He said: “Like everybody else has been explaining, you were on your way and suddenly, people started shooting and your driver tried to manoeuvre, but others came from behind and attacked and picked up people, killed a couple of others and took you into the bush, walked for about two days, then you were taken to their camp.
“I spent 30 days in their camp, apart from the two days we used in walking to that place. And it was during the rainy season, so it was raining day and night.
“That was why I said the strength some of us had must have only come from God. I was not the only person, there were few others, including young women in my group. We all went through; thanks to God.”
He added: “I wouldn’t want to compromise some situations, so I wouldn’t want to go into very deep specifics, but it was an open place. They had the advantage of maybe hearing and seeing people from there. The people who kept watch over their victims were different from those who went for operations.
“These are young and illiterate people who were into drugs and other things. Those who were a little bit older were the ones who would go and scavenge for victims.“

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed has confirmed the removal of electricity subsidy, saying the government has carefully adjusted electricity tariff in the country.
According to the Minister, the government is working towards removing all forms of subsidy including the one on fuel.
She stated that at the moment, there is no form of subsidy in the electricity sector.
Naija News understands Mrs. Ahmed made the revelation on Thursday at a virtual meeting of African Finance Ministers and the International Monetary Fund.
She added that the government had plans to totally remove fuel subsidy by July this year but prevailing circumstances including the COVID-19 pandemic and the protest by Nigerians made the government shift the time frame.
The Finance Minister further revealed that the government was looking at improving tax administration and compliance as a way of boosting resources.
In her words, “We are cleaning up our subsidies. We had a setback; we were to remove fuel subsidy by July this year but there was a lot of pushback from the polity. We have elections coming and because of the hardship that companies and citizens went through during the COVID-19 pandemic, we just felt that the time was not right, so we pulled back on that.
“But we have been able to quietly implement subsidy removal in the electricity sector and as we speak, we don’t have subsidies in the electricity sector. We did that incrementally over time by carefully adjusting the prices at some levels while holding the lower levels down.”
Ahmed added that the government is not relenting on plans for total fuel subsidy removal as it remains the best option in the light of dwindling government resources and economic realities.
“We are currently doing a budget amendment to accommodate incremental subsidy (removal) as a result of the reversal of the decision and we want to cap it at that. Hopefully, the parliament will agree with us and we are able to continue with our plan for subsidy (removal) otherwise the way things are going we will not be able to predict where the deficit will be as a result of the fluctuation in the global market,” she added.

The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje has called for an urgent overhaul of the nation’s security outfits to reposition them for effectiveness.
According to Ganduje, Nigeria is facing a lot of security challenges at the moment and except strategies are galvanized, it will be difficult to overcome such challenges.
He listed some of the challenges to include terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, drug trafficking, cybercrime, robbery, weapon proliferation, human trafficking, communal clashes, hate speeches, and others.
The Governor also identified poverty and unemployment as some of the factors responsible for insecurity in Nigeria.
He, therefore, recommended the modernization of security outfits and collaboration with legislative and judicial institutions as some of the solutions to the security challenges.
Naija News understands the Kano State Governor made the submissions on Friday at the 2022 alumni lecture of the University of Ibadan.
The title of his lecture was ‘Challenges of Insecurity and Nation Building.’
In his lecture, Ganduje said: “Nigeria faces a range of security challenges including, terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, drug trafficking, cybercrime, robbery, weapon proliferation, human trafficking, communal clashes, ethnic nationalism, militancy, manipulation of social media, hate speeches, economic and financial crimes, subversive activities, herdsmen-farmer clashes, piracy, among others,” he said.
“Therefore, efforts to tackle insecurity can only be effective if there is a robust combination of legislative and judicial interventions with government reforms that address some of the acute human security challenges confronting a vast majority of the population.
“The formulation and effective implementation of policies and programmes capable of addressing the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria is crucial, especially with regard to poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation, injustice, corruption, porous borders, and small arms proliferation.
“There is also the need to modernize security agencies with training, intelligence sharing, advanced technology, logistics, motivation, and change of orientation.
“There should be a complete overhaul of the security institutions in the country to reflect international standards of best practices, so as to pre-empt these security breaches, in particular, the failure of the intelligence services to contain the recurring security breaches.
“There should be an institutionalized approach, rather than the episodic and reactive response adopted by the government in the aftermath of attacks.”
Ganduje also said security agencies and agents must be bold, fair, and just in dealing with issues of insecurity.
“In Nigeria, cases that border on insecurity have most often been compromised. Thus, the law is no longer acting as a deterrent,” he added.
“Our law enforcement agencies must, therefore, be incorruptible and fair. To ensure all these, there must be incentives, good conditions of service and social security.”
Earlier, Ganduje had attended the coronation of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun on that same Friday.

Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe in his ruling on Friday stated that the 215 Wards Executive Officers that participated in the parallel gubernatorial primary held at WOCDIF Centre were authentic and authorized Ward Executive Officers permitted to vote as delegates.
The judge also restricted PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognizing any other governorship primaries of the PDP in Osun State.
The court ruled that the governorship primary which produced Adeleke was null and void.
Justice Aderibigbe further ruled that the action taken by NWC of the party is in flagrant disobedience to its judgement on November 22, 2021, which recognized the Ward Executive Officers who produced delegates for the primaries.
