At this moment in time, there’s this air of uncertainty around Chelsea. The West London based football club has been sanctioned by the UK government because they are owned by Roman Abramovich who has a well-known relationship with Vladimir Putin, the Russian President. The sanctions handed to Chelsea prevents them from signing players and also extending the contract of their players. Also, they have been banned from selling merchandise and their matchday expenses have been capped. That’s not all, Chelsea’s bank accounts have been temporarily suspended and this happened after the sanctions on the club.
Now rival fans are having a field day after the sanctions on Chelsea. Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool fans on social media have voiced their opinions on the Chelsea matter saying that it’s only right that the UK government takes away Chelsea’s ‘dirty money. But while these fans are in support of Chelsea’s sanctions, they should know that for the UK government, it’s a war against Russia and Putin, not against Chelsea football club. Whichever way you look at this, Chelsea was sanctioned due to their relationship with Roman Abramovich which means that any other Premier League club with Russian involvement could get sanctions as well.
Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Everton have Russian links. The former Arsenal owner was Russian and the present Everton owner is a Russian. If at the end of the day there’s a clear link between these men and Vladimir Putin, that would spell trouble for these clubs. It goes on to show you why Politics should not be part of football. Right now, Chelsea is the ones getting the wrong end of the stick and rival fans laughing at them but make no mistake, the UK government are still going hard on Russia and any club involved with them either by ownership or sponsorship, is in for a rude awakening.
