In a noteworthy stance, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has thrown its support behind President Tinubu’s consideration to release Nnamdi Kanu from detention. According to a press release signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary General of the organization, Kanu’s anticipated release in December 2023 is expected to have political implications, particularly in the Southeast.
The organization, in its statement, warned against mischievous attempts by certain Igbo political elites to claim credit for Kanu’s release and urged President Tinubu to dismiss such claims. Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized that credit for Kanu’s release should be solely attributed to President Tinubu.
Notably, the press release outlined Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s perspective that Kanu’s release could result in diminished popularity for both Peter Obi and Simon Ekpa in the Southeast. The organization hinted at a potential shift in political dynamics, suggesting that President Tinubu might be considered a viable candidate over Peter Obi in the 2027 elections.
“Politically, the Igbo nation will consider President Tinubu as a viable candidate over Peter Obi in the 2027 elections,” the organization asserted. It also hinted at a positive impact on security, suggesting that Ekpa’s disruptive activities and alleged terrorist tendencies in the Southeast could be consigned to history with Kanu’s release.
The press release concluded with Ohanaeze Ndigbo urging President Tinubu to remain steadfast in his decision-making, expressing confidence in his ability to handle the matter with utmost care and consideration.
