Early Life And Education
Okechukwu Oku, also known as Okey Oku or “the Oracle,” was born in Enugu, southeastern Nigeria. He is the second of eleven children of Goddy and Winifred Oku. Raised in an Igbo family from Ukpo in Dunukofia local government area of Anambra State, Okechukwu’s father, Goddy, was a popular Nigerian musician in the 1970s. His mother, Winifred Oku, is a retired Nigerian Civil Servant. Okechukwu Oku’s younger brother, Udoka ‘Selebobo’ Oku, is a music producer and singer.
Okechukwu Oku began his formal education at WTC Primary School in Enugu and later attended St. Charles Special Science School in Onitsha, Anambra State. However, halfway through his university education, he left school to pursue his passion in the arts.
Music And Cinematography
Okechukwu Oku’s journey into the arts started with music. He recorded gospel tracks and produced music for various musicians in Southeast Nigeria, including Resonance and Flavour N’abania. Eventually, he transitioned into music video directing, shooting videos for artists like SeleBobo.

In 2011, Oku shifted his focus to cinematography and film editing. He worked on several African movies, such as “The Great Niger Mission,” “Brother’s Keeper,” “Jafaar,” and more. His work as an editor and cinematographer in the 2014 film “Brother’s Keeper” earned him nominations at prestigious awards.
In 2013, Okechukwu Oku ventured into directing and producing his own feature films. Some of his notable works include “Love and Oil,” “Burning Bridges,” “The Boss is Mine,” and “Black Rose.” His film “Bambitious” received several awards at the Afrifimo Awards and Film/Music Festival in 2015, including Best Film Director, Best Cinematographer, and Best Video Editor.
