The media aide to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, Valentine Obienyem, has claimed that the leaked audio of his principal’s conversation with the founder of Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, was edited out of context.
Obienyem said in a Facebook post that the audio was badly doctored and that the Muslim-Muslim ticket that led to the discussion was edited out.
He added that Obi had said in the conversation that religious balancing was a necessary consideration in a society like Nigeria where religious recklessness had made Christians to assume it was a religious war.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) fielded a Muslim-Muslim ticket with Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima. The leaked audio had sparked controversy and accusations of religious bigotry against Obi who is a Christian.
However, Obienyem’s statement appears to counter these accusations and suggest that the audio was deliberately edited to portray Obi in a negative light.
In a Facebook post this Sunday, Obienyem said: “The badly doctored conservation with Bishop Oyedepo released by our Nnewi prodigal brother is the much they have discovered so far.
“They edited out the Muslim-Muslim ticket that led to the discussion, where Obi said that in a society like ours, religious balancing was a necessary consideration and that their recklessness had made Christians to assume it was a religious war.”
